Sponsors

You might notice a change here in my layout...I just wanted to go with something a little less busy and a layout with wider space to post. I still have to get my links working and some left over tweaks, but I'm finally satisfied with it.

Anyway, I know a lot of my favorite bloggers host sponsors on their page for a low cost each month, and I want to experiment with it as well, but for free. Basically what I would like to offer is a trade...I'll post your lovely button if you post mine. Its a win win situation! Let's get more traffic on both our sites!

If you are interested in promoting your blog for free on my site, email me at katrinagelino@gmail.com

Spread the word!

It's Been A While

Whew, it's been a while since I've blogged. I feel so disconnected to my own blog as well as the others that I follow and read on the daily! Our trips were completely awesome, especially our honeymoon in Costa Rica! I am currently making a slide show of our fantastic adventure so you'll just have to practice patience, I promise it will be worth it.

I know some of you want to know the status and outcome of the baby making that happened, and although it is kind of a personal thing between me and my husband, I've decided to share. Month one came and went...on to January! I'm not discouraged yet because I know most people aren't blessed in the first month of trying, but I will admit I am a little disappointed. When we are young you just think you try once and it happens, but really its not quite as simple as that. Have any of you Mommies ever tried an ovulation test? Do they work...are they worth buying? Keep your fingers crossed and say a little prayer (if you do that) and hopefully January will be the month of celebration.

Blog Breaks And Blessings

Hi everyone, I know I kind of disappeared, I hope you all aren't too mad with me. I really enjoyed blogging this past summer and enjoyed meeting all of you and seeing beautiful homes and even more beautiful thoughts. It has been a weird last few months, lots of ups and downs with Mr. Swedish Room and I. I felt so all alone with no one to turn to and no direction. I have been unhappy about my life lately, I know kind of stupid. There are so many that are way worst than I am, yet I could not see that, until last week. A friend came to visit me, I was so excited. I showed my friend all the local sites we laughed and had plenty of fun. We also talked about what was happening to me. This friend has never been that profound or inspirational, but I was truly surprised by what I heard. My friend said you only have one life to live if no one wants to walk with you pick yourself up and walk, eventually someone will walk next to you and then another and another. With this message in hand I decided recently to start walking and keep on walking. Today I understood the message fully, I decided not to do Scott's this month. I helped a friend, Angie, last month by storing her tables for her and I promised to bring them this month. I also wanted to bring Ms. Prue and older woman at Scott's who sells toys and pretty things, some toys I bought for her. I also wanted to give a Thank you note to Sonny the man that sells antique books at Scott's, because he did me a favor last month. When I got to Scott's all the other dealers I had talked to and knew gave me hugs and told me they were glad to see me. They said they would miss me this month at the show and couldn't wait to see me next month. I was so happy at the outpouring of love I was smiling and still am. My friend was right, and I'm glad. I missed my little blessings, but I sure saw them today. I hope you all take a minute and see your little blessings. I think my break is over and I'm ready to get back to life.
PS go hug someone today, you may make their day.
See everyone later........

BLOG BUTTONS

Let's share shall we? If you'd like more people to find and bookmark your blog, a button is a great way to get traffic. First you have to make a button. 200x200 is the size, then all you do is add a picture gadget with a link and image. That's it! So easy, so let's do each other a favor and add those puppies. I have already added my Mom's blog, and a few other's that I read on the daily. If you don't see your blog button over there on the right hand side, well it's because you haven't made one! If you'd like to add my button, grab that purdy little image that says "My Button".

Tuesday, the lonliest day.

Poor Tuesday, everyone forgets about you. I found a great personal blog online of another girl's life, and it has inspired me to use this blog for more than just my artsy crafty place. I will be posting more about me and my everyday life, new stuff, old stuff, reflections on stuff & probably some boring stuff that no one will want to read about.

I'll start off with this...it's HOT here. Not just like " oh man its hot outside, I think I'll step in the shade for a bit." But more like " dear god, what have I done to be punished by this oppressing heat, it feels like hell's oven outside!" I never thought I'd end up living here, never in a million years. Florida is one of those places the Midwesterners like to go for spring break, or family vacation. Alas, here we are trying to survive the sun's ultra violet rays. It really is just how I felt in Michigan while growing up. I longed for the summer days in the winter, and here I long for the winter days in the summer. What gives!?!?

I'm complaining today, because I LOVE to be outside as much as possible, but I just feel trapped inside with the rumble of the air conditioner. It's even to hot to lay out by the pool, ha ha. No really, it is!

So I've been working on some new crafty things lately, back to jewelry. I made a necklace out of metal and beads that I covered in cloth. Turned out cute!

I also made a cute pair of earrings from a bracelet Courtney gave me. I think her mother made it for her. Maybe I should give her the earrings! I love them, but I think they'll mean more to her.

I would also like to share a picture of my flowers with you. I buy flowers every two weeks, a bundle of them, organize them how I like, and enjoy the view. I have some on my kitchen counter, some on my coffee table, and I always like to have some on my desk, this is where I spend the majority of my day.
Oh yeah, in case you don't already know...I'm obsessed with birds and branches. This little guy is so cute I could just eat him. He's the newest addition to my nest.

Freebees!

My favorite mornings are those that start with oats and laptop time (blogging) time. Oh, and cappuccino. Absolutely cannot forget the cappuccino.

And not any oats, bloggies...the best oats. Oats a la pumpkin butter! With Splenda brown sugar, turbinado, and pecans. Mmmmm! To DIE for!!!

What's your favorite way to start your morning?

Sadly, Lily's toe is hurt. She was playing with her sissy yesterday, though we're not sure what actually happened. Sweetie pie has been limping around looking all pathetic since it happened. She's going in to see the doggie doc this afternoon. Poor punkin...

Literally, she's looked like this since yesterday. Doesn't she just look...sad? And pathetic?
Count her chins..that always makes me smile.

Lunch today was Tuna Edamame Salad, light string cheese, a Nutridel cookie, and a can of Zevia. It was a really satisfying lunch -- one of the most satisfying I've had in a long time! High-five, self, for planning ahead and making that tuna salad last night!!

The wonderful people at The Healthy Baking Company sent me suncakes and Heart Thrive Meals-to-go. Not only are they adorable, but check this out...

In nutrition and health news...

Will the Food Guide Pyramid eventually include weekend and holiday guidelines? Studies show that weekend eating habits are as terrible as at the holidays. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that the quantity and quality of foods eaten during a meal over the course of the day differs considerably on weekends and and holidays [1]. If you're anything like me, that's not an understatement in the least.

Question: Do you think it's sensible to add holiday and weekend guidelines to the Food Guide Pyramid?

Have a good evening, all...and to all a goodnight! Just kidding...I'll be poking around reading blogs later!

Question: Have any of you Blogspot users converted to Wordpress? What do you think?

My blog is getting ready to undergo a major overhaul. I will soon be found under domain name preventionrd.com and will be a Wordpress blogger (I'll miss the good'ol Blogspot days, I'm sure!). I love to read ALL of the blogs I follow, it was hard to narrow it down! Keep the happiness going by sharing 10 things that make YOU happy and 10 blogs that brighten your day!

On a completely unrelated and shameful note...Jersey Shores is quite possibly as addictive as crack cocaine. Puppy whined at 5:20 this morning (alarm wasn't set to go off til 6:20), and instead of rolling over to go back to bed (what I usually do, especially by Friday!), I got up......AND WATCH JERSEY SHORES BEFORE WORK. I have reached a new level of overly inappropriate TV viewing.

Run #3 on the new treadmill was a nice recovery run of 3.1 miles with a leisurely warm-up and cool-down. LOVE having a treadmill at home. Though, I must admit, the morning workouts have not ensued as I had originally planned. HOWEVER, the important thing is getting in the workouts whether it be morning, noon, or night...and I'm doing that!

What are you up to this weekend? Shopping, shopping, and baking?

Tonight is husband's Christmas party and we're driving around in stretch Expedition limos to see beautiful Christmas lights, and then out for a wonderful Italian dinner (Chianti, woot!). I'm really excited! Have a WONDERFUL weekend...TGIF!!!!!!

A lesson in Kombacha...

I first heard of Kombucha from Paige of Running Around Normal. She drinks the stuff all the time and raves about it's deliciousness and healthfulness. I began researching Kombacha and where I could get some after seeing it spread like wild fire in blogland. Hence, this is why I asked "Zevia or Kombacha" in the This-or-That activity from a few days ago. Which, by the way, you all seemed to love! Thanks for humoring me and my nosiness!

So here are the Kombucha varieties I've located: Citrus, Original, and Multi-Green
The Original flavor tastes like a milder version of Welch's Sparking Cider, to a tee. Taste-wise it was fine. The fizzies gave me a bit of a tummy ache and I didn't enjoy the aesthetics of the floating organisms!! You could seeeeeeeeee them! Kinda cool, but not fun to look at in a beverage! All in all...

Taste: C-
Healthfulness: A-
The reason I don't think Kombucha is a can't-live-without-it health food is simply because all that it contains can be found in other foods. And I tend to stay away from beverages with a caloric content.

Kombucha (kom-BOO-cha) is a Chinese tea which is cultured for 30 days. Each bottle contains all B-vitamins, antioxidants, and probiotics -- 1 billion Lactobacillus Bacterium organisms and 1 billion S. Boulardii organisms.

Here's the label -- nothing shocking here.

I do find it funny that the bottle reads:
"Please note: Due to fermentation, this product may contain a trace amount of alcohol (less than 0.5%)."
I read this as I was drinking the Kombucha and driving. I put the lid on and put it in my purse...just in case!

This portion of the label is stating that Kombucha is a raw food and that cultures (bacteria organisms) can be seen with the nekked eye. And, it's true. There's definitely floaters in the tea.

Morgan (brave soul that she is) of Live, Love, Eat, and Play attempted making her own Kombucha! Read about it here.

I made a recipe tonight from Kalyn's Kitchen -- Roasted Brussel's Sprouts with Pecans and Gorgonzola. Yummmm!! Her recipes ALWAYS look gourmet and delicious. And yet, doable for the average kitchen talent ;)

I tossed the brussel's sprouts with EVOO, salt, pepper, chopped pecans, and fresh minced garlic. I organized them in a single-layer on a Pyrex dish sprayed with cooking spray. I baked at 375 F for 30 minutes.

During the last 5 minutes of baking, I took the sprouts out and sprinkled gorgonzola over the top and placed them back into the oven for a final 5 minutes of cooking.

Result: DELICIOUS!
Husband was like, "Um, ew." (verbatim) when I told him I was making brussel's sprouts. Well, let's just say he went back for seconds of the sprouts before even finishing his dinner plate.

Tonight's dinner was the brussel's sprouts with leftover spaghetti squash topped with a homemade marinara containing diced tomatoes, Chianti, mussels, EVOO, garlic, Italian seasoning, and fresh chopped basil.

Today we had our friends take a family shot of us for our Christmas card. We tried getting our snake, Pinky, in the picture, but Lily doesn't understand that her brother is not edible. Here was our best take...

Giveaway Alert!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful weekend! Yours truly scored a goal in my hockey game today. It was a pretty sweet shot...if I do say so myself! However, we lost 5-3. : (

Question: Do you sometimes feel over-whelmed with the number of blogs you follow each day?
I LOVE to read, especially foodie blogs...but it's a lot of catching up to do every day! Does Google Reader help you stay organized? I want to stay up to speed with you all!

obesity + bloggin', dogs + exercise, and new IRL blog friend!

A new study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research finds that people who spend more time on the computer have a higher risk of obesity, even among those exercising “enough” during the week.  Three categories of internet time were set: none, low (less than 3 hours per week), and high (more than 3 hours per week). People falling in the highest levels of computer use (more than 3 hours per week) were 1.5x more likely to be overweight and 2.5x more likely to be obese when compared to people who don’t use the computer at all [1].

Advice? Aim for 250.
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends people spend 150 minutes per week exercising and 250 minutes per week if they want to lose weight [1].

Really? 3 hours a week is a lot? No wonder I want to lose weight! ;)

And for us dog lovers, some wonderful news!

The average dog owner gets more exercise walking their pets than someone with a gym membership. The average dog owner exercises their pet 2x a day for 24 minutes each time – 5 hours and 38 minutes a week. In addition, the average dog owner takes their pet on three long walks a week, adding on another 2 hours and 33 minutes of activity [2].

Those without dogs spend a mere 80 minutes per week at the gym or heading out for a jog. However, 47% of non-pet owners admit they do absolutely NO exercise [2].

And who’s happier? A whopping 86% of dog owners reported enjoying the time they spend walking their dogs while a mere 16% reported enjoying their time spent at the gym [2].
I almost wish I owned a more athletic breed of dog. Lily is athletic for a bulldog, but that isn't saying much...

And last night (after boot camp, no less!) I met a fellow bloggie for a beer (go check her out, her blog is pretty awesome!). And we have a freakish amount in common...

- both named "Nicole"
- she is from Tulsa, I am living in Tulsa
- both RD's!
- both have important people in our life named "Rob/Robbie"
- both 24

Crazy, huh?! It was great to talk and network with another RD! Thanks for meeting with me, Nicole!! Safe travels back to Cali!

Questions:
Have you ever met a "blog friend" IRL (in real life)? Maybe at FNCE or somewhere similar?
If you are a pet owner, how many times a week would you say you walk your dog?
How many hours a week, realistically, do you spend online blogging/Facebooking/emailing friends, etc. (non-work related, basically)?

I would have to say I spend at least 9 hours a week online/blogging/emailing/Facebooking in a week -- most of which takes place on the weekends. Eek!

And we walk Lily about 5 times a week for 20 minutes a pop...failing on that one, too!

New reads & recipes...and a whole lot of thanks!

I've found some great new blogs to read, enjoy, and learn from this weekend. I haven't "gotten out there" in the blog world due to limited time at the computer. Well, more like a lack of down time. So, check out some new blogs per my recommendation, why don't ya!?

Andrea and Erin of Care to Eat
Corinne of Green Grapes Blog
Michelle of Lucky Taste Buds
Meredith of Pursuing Balance
Tay of Taydor Tot

And on the topic of reading...Hedge Fund Wives by Tatiana Boncompagni is HILARIOUS! I'm only a few chapters in and am thoroughly enjoying it! Thank you, KG for the rec! Glad I asked for rec's!! : )

I went to Akins Health Foods Store after my FIRST hockey game today. Other than Zevia's price increase and the discontinued pumpkin apricot butter I'm obsessed with in my oats, it was a successful venture. As always. Check out the loot:
Going from left to right: organic quinoa, organic low-sodium chicken broth, organic almond granola, Terra Chips x 2, Tasty Thai organic pad thai dinner kit, Fiber Gourmet mac'n cheese, raw honey, and nutritional yeast flakes.

For my oatmeal which will no longer be laden with pumpkin butter (*tear*), I purchased reduced-fat, organic coconut. I think vanilla soy milk + coconut flakes could be potentially mouth-watering additions to old-fashioned oats, eh?

And most importantly, I tried a new dish that is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I don't say that very often, so believe it. This salad dressing is by far, hands down, shout-it-from-the-roof-tops phenom (and a recipe of Gina's). Unless maybe you detest goat cheese, and then I question the reliability of your palate. Kidding...kinda. But really, if you decide to try something new in the future, consider this Honey Goat Cheese Dressing!!

Salad: mixed greens, diced apples, Craisins, and pecans topped with Honey Goat Cheese Dressing! Deliciousohhh! Husband seconds that claim, too!

Honey Goat Cheese Dressing

4 ounces fresh goat cheese
1 1/2 Tbsp honey
2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 tsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 Tbsp water
Kosher salt and black pepper to taste

Directions:

Blend together, mixing until combined and creamy in texture.
46 calories per tablespoon

We also had sirloin steaks with bleu cheese topping. Mmmm! I've had red meat twice this month, that's a near record for me. Typically, not a huge red meat fan. But bleu cheese steaks...hook a sistah up! I do believe this makes me a FLEXITARIAN!

bleu cheese smothered sirloin with buttermilk mashed potatoes

Last night husband and I went out to dinner to a new Thai restaurant. Here's what we ordered...

Tom Kah soup with tofu...SOO  GOOD!!

Husband got pineapple fried rice with seafood (which was okay, but it was canned pineapple...bummer!)

Chicken and Vegetable Curry for me...mmm!

I cannot believe tomorrow is our 6 month wedding anniversary! How beautiful was our Chicago wedding? Ahhh! Perfect, amazing day!

It's been a wonderful 6 months filled with an abundance of blessings...a new home, a WONDERFUL job, the cutest little puppy, and most importantly...our health and love for one another.

So tell me...

What are YOU thankful for this Thanksgiving?
What is your FAVORITE Thanksgiving dish?
What do you use nutritional yeast on/in?

Recipes and Reform

Boy, do I have a treat for you all today! Go to Gina's WW Recipes for some WONDERFUL and EASY recipes to try! My patient load is light today and I was able to spend some time perusing her blog this morning, saving TONS of recipes I'd like to try! If you enter your email address into her FeedBurner, you'll never miss a great recipe delivered right to your inbox!

Today for lunch I ordered take-out from Chili's Guiltless Grill (our microwave at work is still on the fritz)...the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich to be exact. It was really good! I was feeling great about my "Guiltless Grill" selection until I learned of the sodium...over 2,300 milligrams! Ahhh! At least the sandwich was only 386 calories, 7 grams of fat, and contained 9 grams of fiber??? :-/ Disappointing, Chili's! Very disappointing! I've also been reading Gina's blog, which has probably made me hypersensitive about sodium levels...which is a good thing!!!!!

Today for a snack I tried the Kay's Naturals Honey Almond Protein Cereal (gluten-free). I love the crunch of a cereal, but would be interested to see if the crunch held when served with milk (I ate the cereal plain). Most gluten-free products are "airy" in taste, weight, and texture...and the Kay's Naturals products are no exception. Though I should mention, I am a fan of the "light-weight" nature of gluten-free products...less bloat, I feel. The Honey Almond Protein Cereal is lightly sweetened, nothing over-powering which I prefer. Again, the portion size is excellent and one serving contains 100 calories, 3 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of protein! Nice work, Kay's Naturals...I am LOVING your products! Thank you!!

And in the news...a feather in the caps of those like myself in prevention...
A new poll for American's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows the majority of Americans consider disease prevention the MOST important element of health care reform.

The US Department of Health and Human Services aimed to reduce obesity rates to 15% in every state before 2010 (baaahahaha!). However, the trend is showing movement in the opposite direction -- obesity rates continuing to rise. As of 1991, no US state had an obesity rate over 20%. Today, only Colorado has an obesity rate under 20%.

In playing devil's advocate I have to propose...DO we (as a nation) want to change, or are we just sick and tired of our ill-fate if trends continue?

If you had to take a side in this debate, what do you feel is consensus for the nation as a whole
a) improve health through prevention (nutrition, exercise, and preventative health care)

--OR--
b) continue Western medicine of treating the disease and not the problem

The Guinness Challenge

You may have noticed...I have moved! I
am no longer "Produce Princess"....but rather, I am now "PreventionRD". I wanted to switch my domain name (I'm not too tech savvy...is that correct blog terminology?) to something that was related to my blog site name. Does that even make sense? Anyways, I have moved to here. I hope you all find me...or I find you, or else...I will miss you!

So, today was the Guinness Challenge and we had a blast! Just for you, blog world, I was a picture-takin' fool....

Let's start this blog post recap from the beginning. Irish bar hosting the run = bag pipers!
I LOVE bag pipes!

Here's the group ready to run...Bailey, too. I'm the SHORT blonde (I'm 5'3...these folks are just giants!)

Here's the start of the race. We started in the back 'cause we were a lil late getting our bibs and chips...

And here I start my runtography. A view of our Tulsa skyline and a fairly good shot of some elevated course ahead (uggggggggh)

 Beer stop #1
THIS was SUPPOSED to be at 1.5 miles. Thanks to my Garmin 305, however, I knew it was at 2.2 miles. Thank you, Garmin.

This is a timed event, people. Lady like manners not required.

Still beer stop #1 here...Matt and I were fairly hardcore about our carb stops, but not hardcore enough to omit time for photographic memories!!

Here I am showing off my Guinness...and my Garmin 305, most importantly.

 Hello, HILL. Bahhhhhhhh!!!!

On the down-hill...but a longggg ways to go to beer stop #2.
P.S. HATE races where people ahead of you are passing on the opposite side of the road!!

Dun dun! Beer stop #2! Workin' hard or hardly working, folks?

Ok, they worked hard enough....but not at the right times. Warm Guinness = drinking bread.

Beer stop #2 photo opp of Matt and I (lookin' a lil rough here, not gunna lie!)

Translation for those of you who don't know sign language...2 down, 1 to go

 ...Back over that blasted hill

 FINISH LINE IN SIGHT!!!!!

....but not before our last beer at mile 4. Mid-gulp, sorry about that face. This is a timed event, remember?

Husband, me, and Matt. Drinking our congratulatory brews from the race sponsors (like we needed them)
...I did give away my second one, however!!

 The Guinness Challenge Finishers!!!

It probably goes without saying, but I have a headache and a warm bath calling my name. Ciao for now, bloggies!
