Eve's Fanatsy

Title: Pantasya ni Eba (Oil on Canvass - painted October 2005)

Even before the day came when I painted this work of art, the idea of being a woman filled with fantasies and dreams was born on 1978. But only in 2005, when the ideas were uttered on paper and on canvass. The interpretation of the woman I want to be was painted on this absurd horizontal canvass and written on a three pages essay that were both submitted to Philip Morris contest more than three years ago. I was looking back at the journey I had and I always have this idea of how I want to profile myself after all these years of hard work and never-ending dreams.

Joan Manalang born in Manila –Philippines on 1978. Develops a work influenced by different powerful women and global female cultures. With a smooth way of painting, she develops a different and delusive topics linked with the life experience of the urban women translated in their own routine with urban interventions. Started her job in 2000. The journey of doing uncountable brochures, flyers, posters, banners, hundreds of print ads, and remarkable TV commercials makes her think that the road to Cannes Lions is narrow but not impossible to travel. Nowadays she has develop expositions, illustrations, paintings & graffiti. She also preaches about food with the inspiration she gets from whom she considered a food guru – Jamie Oliver. Never a day that she stop concocting gastronomical dishes that will captivate the taste buds of every food enthusiasts. She also classifies her self as female poetic visual artist with taste and class. She is also searching for the valorization of the women as a singular productive and creative human being in a society.

Anyway this might be a good intro for wiki. Sigh. But who knows? :-)

There Is Life In The Now

It is so easy to get caught up in the hurt of "should have been" and the fear of "what if." They are not, however, what God desires for us. I believe that God yearns for us to experience the strength of the moment, the now.

Both the past and the future have too often become reflections of death rather than life. God, through the voices of scripture says "choose life."

"Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, "Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"

Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, "Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"

No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction…

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…"

from Deuteronomy 30:11-20

"I was regretting the past and fearing the future. Suddenly God was speaking. "My name is 'I Am.'" I waited... God continued.

"When you endeavor to dwell in the past, lamenting over all of its mistakes, missteps and regrets, it is hard to feel empowered and encouraged. I am not there. My name is not 'I was.'

"When you exhaust yourself by worry about the future, with all of its unknowns, problems and fears, it is hard to feel at ease and calm. I am not there. My name is not 'I will be.'

"When you live in this very moment, embracing all that is and breathing in the newness of life, it is not hard at all because I am here. My name is 'I Am.'"

A Happy Omelette

I was feeling slightly rough this morning. Perhaps something to do with too much Guinness and some bizarre shooters containing (I think) Amaretto and Baileys.

Tea and marmite on toast provided temporary relief. Likewise for a shower and a shot of espresso. But both were short lived and for a while I thought bed was the only way to go.

In a final effort to fight off the ill, I thought that something vaguely greasy, eggy and fried might do the trick. Remembering there was still some pork cheek leftover as well as a small finger of cheddar, an omelette seemed the logical conclusion.

It’s not often eggs come with surprise messages from one's girlfriend (or boyfriend) but today mine did:

And that, more than anything else, made me feel better.

Mind you, the omelette helped, as well.

Parsnip Soup

After teasing us with mild breezes and generous sunshine a couple of days ago, spring retreated with rapidity and definition yesterday.

Enter noisy winds, heavy rain and a reminder that it is still too early to put away the hats, scarves and gloves just yet.

But there is always comfort to be had in the kitchen.

The right food has an amazing ability to echo what is going on beyond the windows, especially when rain is pounding into the glass like an invading army. It comforts and reassures. Encourages and delights. Warms and satisfies.

Soup, above most other things, can perform these tasks effortlessly. And a curried parsnip soup, smooth and delicately spiced, is certainly one of the best.

I know this shouts ‘Winter!’ but sometimes you just have to go with what you know is right.

To make this warming cuddle-in-a-bowl, just peel and roughly dice the veggies – two or three parsnips, a couple of onions and a decent sized potato. Lightly fry in a little olive oil until a little colour starts to appear. Add a couple of litres of stock (vegetable or light chicken) and simmer until all the vegetables are tender.

Whizz in a food processor then return to the pan for seasoning. A teaspoon of mild curry powder, some Garam Masala and a little black pepper should do just fine. This isn’t a spicy hot soup, merely one that will entice you into a warming embrace whilst the wind does its worst outside.
