Two Politicians

Tim Pawlenty (H/T: Claire Berlinski of Ricochet):

Ronald Reagan:

Notice a difference?

makin sakit sejak Sabtu. sebab tu hilang, lagi.

assalamualaikum.

hye. sy terase mcm diri sendiri mcm chipsmore - kejap ade, kejap tak de. okay sy rase entry ni mesti panjang lebar, full with grammar errors, dan makcik joyah pun mesti tak berminat nak bace. tak mengape, tak perlu bace. awal-awal dah terus terang ni.

sejak sabtu lalu, sy jadi semakin sakit. sangat. i mean dlm rabu ke khamis sy dah blh mkn burger lembu dgn tenang. slow-slow, asalkan sejuk dan tak pedas. sabtu, sy teringin nak makan ayam goreng drummet kecil tu. sy ingt sy dah ok, sekali malam tu mula sakit. sakitnye mcm mane? bile telan air liur, sakit di tekak, terus serang ke telinga, terus ke mata (senak), dan terus ke kepale.

semalam, Isnin makin sakit. malam semalam pergi Emergency deparment di hospital during night. tak boleh tahan lagi. makan mmg dah kurang sgt, sebab mkn roti pun sakit. tapi ni sampai minum air dan telan air liur pun tersujud sambil tutup telinga & mengalir air mate, bayangkan saje. jadi sakit sebegini sbb serangan di telinga dan kepale. itu perit. malangnya Dr tak mampu buat apa-apa dan suruh dtg semula utk rujuk pakar ENT, esoknya.

Pagi tadi terus pergi jumpa Dr ENT. entah apa sebab, beliau sedang moody. sy yg tgh sakit ni rase mahu cekik-cekik saje beliau. katanya, tak boleh buat apa, makan ubat & spray mcm biase, mungkin berlanjutan 2-3 minggu lagi. sakit tahu? badan dah susut sikit dlm 2-3 hari ni. susut SIKIT itu bermakna mmg sikit dan tiada siapa yg akan sedar ye.

dalam 2 hari ini jugak, berturut-turut Sugar kucing kesayangan yg alhamdulilah gemuk gedempol telah melukakan sy secara fizikal! kelmarin di tangan, semalam di kaki, akibat sikap gurau kasar beliau. grrr. nasib baik awk disygi tahu! oh ye, ptg td kaki terkepit pintu kereta pulak. what's next? kurang sikit dosa. hehe. (pasrah)

sebenarnya. jujur cakap, redha dengan kesakitan yg mendatang sejak november lalu. tapi banyak benar tanggungjawab yg tergendala. sgt banyak. sekarang mula terkumpul dan menyerabutkan otak. terutama apabila menerima desakan luar. sekarang bertimbun dan terpaksa selesaikan 1-1. entah macam mana nasib? masalah yang dicari sendiri, mungkin.

so esok akan mula dengan langkah pertama. langkah besar.

membuang semua useless item dari bilik, WARDROBE REHAB iaitu kemas almari sebetul-betulnya sebab terlalu berselerak sejak sakit, main gapai apa yang ada, main simpan apa yg sempat. ish, selekeh. majalah-majalah lama bertimbun utk dikitar semula walaupun bernilai hanya RM 0.22 sen / 1kg. segala rak-rak dan laci.

doakan sy berjaya esok. dan tolong doakan sy makin kurang sakit esok.

till then, thank you utk doa-doa dan take care.

oh ye, makan puas-puas selagi sihat, dan dlm masa yg sama jgn makan sampai mendatangkan penyakit. sungguh sy rindu masakan pedas, benda masin, panas, ayam, telur, ikan, keropok lekor, black pepper. T_____T

A Confirmed "Dork"

Really?
Is it confirmed?
I am really a dork?
The confirmation of this reality in my kids' eyes was...well...
confirming.
To "dork-dom"  I be "doomed".
I'm telling you.
This is the life with teens watching your every faux pas.
And my teens are of the polite variety.
It was the constant shifting downward of the eyes to my feet.
It was the slight exchanging of shared acknowledgment concerning my stylistic impairments.
It was the
"feet cold, Mom?"
question filled with barely detectable snickers of amusement.
Really?
Is there no where I can hide?
My feet were COLD.

God bless you, sir.

Creamy Jerusalem Artichoke Soup

Knobbly needn't always signify knees. Just look at these! Jerusalem artichokes are the most extraordinary shape with a serious resemblance to ginger. Nothing to do with globe artichokes and definitely not with Jerusalem either.

But I seem to spend my life peeling odd vegetables. Invariably it's worth it and these aren't as awkward as they look. They are actually edible tubers which originated in North America where they are also known as sunchokes or earth apples. Interestingly enough, this last is the exact translation of the Turkish name for them: yer elması. Despite their appearance, their taste is quite unique and made into a soup, will have your guests wondering what they're eating.

peeled and naked
Here in Turkey they are at the height of their season right now as it runs from November to March. You will probably find them in up-market restaurants rather than in the home and probably as a meze in olive oil/zeytinyağlı. Always choose firm fresh-looking ones; they will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks unpeeled. If you peel them ahead of time, make sure you put them in cold water with a little lemon juice otherwise they will discolour.

Here is my recipe for Creamy Jerusalem Artichoke Soup which I discovered last year thanks to Gary Rhodes. He is one of my real hero British chefs.  This soup is a real winner for a dinner party as it looks and tastes sophisticated.

Ingredients
Serves 6

600g/1lb 5oz Jerusalem artichokes, peeled
1 small potato (about 100-140g/4-5oz) quartered
1 large onion, chopped
600ml/1pt vegetable or chicken stock ( use bought fresh or make up with a stock cube)
450ml/16fl oz milk

to serve:
2 heaped tbsp finely grated parmesan
142ml carton single or whipping cream
1-2 tbsp milk
2 tsp snipped chives, optional

Method

Put all the ingredients in a pan and bring to a simmer. Continue to simmer, covered, for about 20-30 mins or until the artichokes and potatoes have become very tender. Liquidise the soup in batches until completely smooth. If you want to thin it, add more stock.

To serve:

Pour the cream into a small pan and simmer to reduce by a third. Stir in the parmesan and let it melt. (For a little extra body, add a tbsp or two of soup.) Stir in 1-2 tbsp milk to cool it down, then blitz with a stick blender, if you like, for a frothy finish. (To avoid any splashes, transfer the cream to a larger pan or deep bowl to do this.) Ladle the soup between soup bowls, topping each with the warmed cream and a sprinkling of chives if using.

Tips
  • This is a remarkably clear recipe, I think. I sieved the finished soup before adding the garnish just to ensure that velvety consistency.
  •  Since we don't get chives here, I used spring onions. Definitely a good idea to have that green contrast with the velvety creamy colour.
  • I did use my stick blender at the last minute but it didn't get particularly frothy. Was it the cream, I wonder? The parmesan is a wonderful touch as it just adds to the depth of taste.

Gary recommends Parmesan sticks to serve. You can buy them here so I got some of those. I also served some wonderful brown bread full of seeds. As a starter, it was a big success!
