Are We Pushing Our Kids Too Hard?

... or has societal evolution raised the bar for them?

I've just spent an hour going through YouTube videos on overcoming performance anxiety and how to prepare for soccer tryouts. As I did so, I thought about the criticisms of modern parents that we push our kids too hard. I've heard other parents in the stands at games exclaim, "We never had travel baseball when I was growing up. We didn't have club soccer, either!"

Whatever things were like in the past, we have kids' competitive sports leagues now and that's just the way it is. It's an evolution of sorts, people learning how to get better at all ages in all things. For example, we didn't have computers decades ago, so school was a bit easier, particularly engineering curricula. There was less to learn. Now there's more learning, more competition and you have to work harder to achieve success. Sports is no different. It's more sophisticated than ever.

Maybe instead of pushing our kids too hard, what we're doing is reacting to a new reality. I know that for my daughter, her goal of playing high school soccer is unattainable if she doesn't play club ball. I have to push her harder than girls her age were pushed 40 years ago. She has to learn how to succeed in the America of 2011, not some world of the past.

This is not your daughter's swim team.

Rainbow Trout Steamed in White Wine with Fresh Mixed Salad

It has been quite some time since I last featured rainbow trout on this blog and given that it is likely to be classed as a sustainable species of fish, I thought it was time to put that right. Rainbow trout is native to North America but it was introduced to British waters many years ago. It is widely farmed and many waters are regularly stocked for the benefit of anglers. This recipe may therefore be perfectly suited to anyone who has just been on a successful fly fishing trip.

This recipe is for two people.

Ingredients

2 small rainbow trout
4oz pack of mixed green salad leaves
1/2 a red onion
12 to 15 pitted black olives
2 whole sprigs of fresh dillweed
2 tbsp dry white wine
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Salt and white pepper
Fresh bread as an accompaniment

Method

The only cooking involved in this recipe is of the rainbow trout. Getting the trout in to the oven is therefore the first step. The oven should be put on to preheat to 375F/190C/Gas Mark 5.

The trout should be gutted (have your fishmonger do this for you if you like) but otherwise left whole. They should then be washed thoroughly under running cold water. Line a deep baking tray with tinfoil. Season the cavities of the fish with salt and white pepper and place a whole sprig of dill inside. Lay the trout on the foil and pour the wine over the top. It may not seem like much wine to use but the idea is to steam the trout, not poach them like in a fish kettle.

Take a second sheet of tinfoil and use it to cover the tray, making sure it is tucked in well at the edges to seal the fish inside and prevent the steam escaping. Place the tray in to the oven for twenty minutes. (Note that larger fish will take longer, with the rule of thumb for larger rainbow trout being approximately fifteen minutes per pound.)

While the rainbow trout are baking/steaming, the salad should be prepared. The salad leaves should be placed in a dish large enough to accommodate the trout. The red onion half should be sliced, separated in to strips and added along with the olives. The olive oil should be poured over the top and the mix seasoned with salt and white pepper prior to being carefully tossed.

The baking tray should be removed from the oven with oven protecting gloves and the tinfoil very carefully pulled aside, as the escaping steam can cause painful burns. Take a metal skewer and pierce each fish at its thickest fleshy part. Significant resistance means that more cooking time is required. Using a fish turner, lift the fish and place them on top of the salad.

Serving the trout is possible in a number of ways. You may wish to take the dish as pictured at the top of this post to the table and serve at that point, or alternatively, you may wish to separate the trout in to big flakes to scatter over the salad as below. Either way, some fresh crusty bread serves as an excellent accompaniment.

Boys' Vs. Girls' Sports Anxiety Treatments

My daughter, who plays club soccer, needs some help overcoming performance anxiety. She sometimes panics in games and doesn't trust her skills. She has a tendency to pass the ball too quickly when she gets control of it instead of dribbling it up the field. I spent some time on line looking up techniques for overcoming sports performance anxiety and came up with two distinct schools of thought.

The most common one, best exemplified by this article on WebMD, recommends you banish all negative thought.
  • Shift the focus off of yourself and your fear to the enjoyment you are providing to the spectators. Close your eyes and imagine the audience laughing and cheering, and you feeling good.
  • Don't focus on what could go wrong. Instead focus on the positive. Visualize your success.
  • Avoid thoughts that produce self-doubt.
Another school of thought, whose example link I lost, suggested that you get your teammates all around you to laugh and jeer while you learn to block it out. That sounds like it's guaranteed to fail for most girls.

I've been blessed to manage both my son's Little League teams and my daughter's school soccer teams. Boys and girls react very, very different to criticism and mocking. You can do it in small doses with boys, and practically never with girls. As I read through the articles on the web, I was surprised that they didn't break down their recommendations by sex. Another casualty of politically correct thinking, I suppose. Oh well.

Expert Village hits the nail right on the head in this video on coaching girls' soccer.

A Penny for your Thoughts...

What do you think?
Can you guess?
We are all familiar with this occasion
or situation
or
infatuation...

Some little tots begin to cry
Adults tend to relax and sigh
Can you guess?
What is this mess?
We should all pretty much know
But, probably only odd types like me take photos, though...

Its an irresistible temptation
that we should indulge only on occasion
But!  Its such a treat!
It leaves one feeling so upbeat!

What do you think?
WHAT do you think?
This place...
that is cobalt blue,
salt and pepper black,
and cotton candy pink?
(leave a guess in my comments and I'll spill the thrill on Wednesday)
