HAKA!!! Te Rauparaha's War Chant .

HAKA?
what is it?

If you've seen a rugby match, you could have witnessed the haka.expecialy if its the ALL Black form New Zealand.

The term haka refers generically to all Maori dance but has now come to mean the Maori dance repertoire where the men are in front and women lending vocal support at the back.

War chant and challenge

But with the All Blacks promoting one version of the haka which starts with the chant "Ka mate, ka mate (It is death, it is death"), it is this haka, called Te Rauparaha's haka (so named after its perceived traditional origins) that most people, particularly rugby union football fans, know as the haka.

This version of the haka is both war chant and challenge and is customarily performed by the All Blacks before major games against non-New Zealand teams.

It is characterised by loud chanting, much aggressive flailing of arms and stomping of feet, fierce looks and, in the end, an angry sticking out tongues.

Te Rauparaha

Te Rauparaha (1768-1849), chief of the Ngati Toa tribe and one of New Zealand's last great warrior chiefs. Te Rauparaha cut a swathe from the Waikato to the South Island where his followers killed both European settlers and southern Maori.

His haka is said to have actually originated during a time Te Rauparaha was fleeing from his enemies, hid in a sweet potato field one night and by morning awoke to be told by a hairy chief that his enemies had gone. He then performed his victorious haka.

Ka mate, ka mate

The words of Te Rauparaha's haka (1810) used by the All Blacks:

    Ka mate, ka mate
    Ka ora, ka ora
    Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nana i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra
    Upane, upane
    Upane kaupane
    Whiti te ra.

These words are translated as:

It is death, it is death
It is life, it is life
    This is the hairy man
Who caused the sun to shine again for me
Up the ladder, up the ladder
    Up to the top
    The sun shines.

I personally use this to pump myself up for any competition. In a way this helps build the state of a strong fighting spirit. you should test it out yourself.

Please leave a comment or share about your personal way you get pump-up.

Thanks!!! =)

Simple Pork Shish Kebabs with Soured Cream Dip

Shish kebabs are of course most commonly made with either lamb or beef and - honestly! - the reason these ones are not made with lamb is because somehow a pack of minced pork had found its way in among the minced lamb in my local supermarket and I never noticed until I got home! I therefore decided to carry on anyway with my recipe idea and am glad I did as the finished dish was absolutely delicious.

Ingredients per Person

1/2lb minced or ground pork
1 red chilli pepper
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 tsp dried sage
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 tbsp soured cream
2 tsp freshly chopped coriander leaf/cilantro

Generous handful of fresh green salad leaves such as rocket

Method

Prepare the dip first by simply stirring the coriander in to the soured cream. This allows the flavours time to infuse.

De-seed and finely chop the chilli and crush or very finely chop the garlic cloves. Mix the pork, chilli, garlic, sage and seasoning thoroughly together. This is best achieved by hand.

Divide the mixture in to three equal portions and shape as shish kebabs (sausage like.) Take three metal skewers and carefully slide the kebabs on to them. It is of course possible to use wooden skewers if you prefer but be ensure to soak them well beforehand. The added benefit of metal skewers, however, is that they conduct heat in to the centre of the kebabs and help to cook them more quickly and evenly.

The kebabs should be cooked under a moderate grill for about fifteen to twenty minutes until cooked. Alternatively, they would cook very well on an outdoor grill or barbecue. Turn them frequently, remembering to wear a protective glove.

Place the dipping sauce in the centre of a large plate and surround it with the salad leaves before sitting the cooked kebabs on top.
