A new range of microwave curry ready meals, which tell you when they're ready to eat by emitting a loud whistle, are set to appear in British stores. Six Indian dishes, made by S&R Foods under the East End brand, will hit the shelves next month.
The innovative MicVac packaging, developed in Sweden, does not need piercing and there is no need to stir the ingredients halfway through the cooking process. ‘You put the product in a microwave, don’t have to stir it, hear it whistle and it’s ready,’ MicVac agent Andrew Niznik said.

‘It’s a step change in the industry. It’s a clean product and under vacuum so there’s no chance of listeria. We’ve got a Michelin-starred chef who has been using it in Sweden.’
The technology works like a mini-pressure cooker, in which the trays of food are covered with a film prior to initial cooking to retain all nutrients and flavours and form a vacuum seal that blocks bacteria. A valve is applied that whistles like a kettle when the food is reheated.
